Are kitchen islands still in style? Would an island look good in your kitchen? What size kitchen island would fit in your space?
Whether you’re planning a full kitchen renovation or simply looking to add storage space when blowing out a wall, the right kitchen island design makes all the difference. A well-designed island offers more than just a space to prep food, it enhances the flow of the kitchen and becomes a focal point of the home.
Enhance Your Kitchen Island Layout
When we design a custom kitchen island, we start with an understanding of how the space will be used every day.
In our recent Ritchie kitchen renovation, the homeowner wanted generous prep space without crowding the kitchen, so we crafted a long, narrow island that allowed for generous room to move comfortably on both sides. The client also loved to entertain, so we added a jog at one end, perfect for hosting guests or enjoying family breakfasts. Additionally, storage was a priority for the homeowner, so we added large drawers placed for easy access from the stovetop.
Every detail, from the island shape to the cabinet finish, was crafted with the homeowner’s lifestyle in mind.
Integrate a Downdraft Range Hood into your Kitchen Island
When designing a custom kitchen around a central island, maintaining a clean, open sightline is often one of the homeowner’s main goals.
In our Greenfield main floor project, integrating a downdraft range hood allowed the island to stay uncluttered, keeping the space open without sacrificing function. The downdraft system rises only when the homeowner needs it, effectively capturing steam and cooking odours. This keeps the visual focal point on the island’s premium finishes and craftsmanship. When the homeowners want to cook while entertaining guests, the downdraft range hood allows the homeowners to cook and interact with their friends without turning away from the conversation.
Find Creative Storage Solutions for your Kitchen
The most remarkable kitchen islands are designed with creativity and purpose.
In our Grange kitchen renovation, the island was reimagined to offer more workspace, more storage, and more seating, all without overwhelming the kitchen’s small footprint. By building a long, narrow island with tucked-in seating and custom drawers and cupboards, the design made the kitchen feel bigger and provided extra storage space for the homeowner.
We also integrated a sleek wine fridge into the island, which enhanced the kitchen’s everyday use and entertainment value, and is perfect for any homeowner who loves to host.
Add Simple Cleaning Upgrades Into Your Kitchen Island
Some of the best features of a custom home are the ones that quietly make life easier.
A built-in vac pan, tucked into the island’s toe kick, allows you to sweep debris directly into the central vacuum system, with no dustpan required. It’s a small upgrade that has a big impact on daily routines, keeping the kitchen mess-free without disrupting the island’s clean, timeless silhouette.
Craftsmanship doesn’t just mean building something remarkable, it means building something that makes life easier in small, lasting ways. More than a renovation; an expression of what matters most.
