3 Ways That Remarkable Lighting Can Transform your Home

Lighting is one of the most transformative elements of an Edmonton home renovation. The right lighting plan can enhance how you use your space, improve the ambiance, and add a premium design finish that feels intentional and high-end.

In this blog, we’ll explore three types of lighting that can make a big impact on your renovation and what to consider if you want a result that’s functional and remarkable.

Transform Your Kitchen With Custom Lighting Plans

This Edmonton kitchen renovation started with a clear goal: to replace a dark, cramped U-shaped layout with a bright, modern space that worked better for everyday life. We removed the bulky overhead structure, redesigned the lighting grid for even, functional coverage, and added statement pendant lights over the new island. The result was a smart open-concept kitchen with better flow, upgraded lighting, and a clean, contemporary look.

If you’re looking for better lighting in your kitchen, start with these key tips:

  • Start with task lighting. Prioritize task lighting where you need it most, like over countertops and the island. In this kitchen, pendant lights were added above the island to bring light closer to the workspace while also acting as a design focal point.

  • Plan your grid layout with intention. A well-laid-out pot light grid ensures the lighting will be even across the whole space. In this Edmonton renovation, the old kitchen had a large, awkward bulkhead with a strange pot light configuration. We replaced it with a clean, linear lighting grid that flows naturally with the new layout.

  • Layer different lighting types. Combining ambient, task, and accent lighting makes the kitchen practical and visually appealing. Along with pot lights and pendants, we often recommend under-cabinet lighting or puck lighting in display cabinets or floating shelves.

With the right lighting plan, you can make your kitchen brighter, more functional, and a standout feature in your home.

Use Layered Lighting to Elevate Your Bathrooms

Lighting can completely change how your bathroom feels. This ensuite shows just how effective a layered lighting plan can be. Here are a few key considerations for your next bathroom project:

  • Start with task lighting. Backlit, anti-fog mirrors offer the ideal lighting for daily routines like makeup or shaving, while a dedicated shower light is perfect for brightening the space and ensuring clear visibility when washing, shaving, or scrubbing down.

  • Add ambient light for comfort. Wall sconces and a pendant above the tub provide soft, full-room lighting that makes the space feel warm and welcoming.

  • Incorporate display lighting. Puck lighting above floating shelves can highlight your favourite decor items and adds a custom, spa-like feel.

  • Control the mood with dimmers. Every fixture in this bathroom is on a dimmer, allowing the homeowner to go from bright and functional to calm and cozy, perfect for a relaxing soak in the tub in the evening.

  • Think about placement and flexibility. A mix of lighting on separate switches lets you tailor the light for different uses, from early morning routines to winding down at night.

Whether you’re building a spa-inspired retreat or a hardworking family bathroom, thoughtful lighting design makes all the difference.

Add Ambience and Function to Your Living Room with Puck Lighting

Puck lighting can be a small upgrade with a big visual payoff, but the key is to plan for it early. In this Henderson Estates project, we installed puck lights in floating shelves to highlight the fireplace and bar area.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when planning for your living room lighting:

  • Plan ahead. Puck lighting needs to be roughed in before drywall, so it’s essential to know exactly where shelves and wiring will go.

  • Think multi-purpose. These lights provide soft ambient glow when the main lights are off, but also serve as practical task lighting, perfect for making a drink or highlighting your favourite display items.

  • Choose your fixtures wisely. Options like RGBK puck lights let you customize the colour for any mood or occasion. Watching an Oilers game with friends and family? You can turn the lights blue and orange!

When well-executed, integrated lighting like this adds another layer of sophistication to your Edmonton home.
