Make a Small Space Spectacular

When it comes to a small living space, every detail counts. The right design choices can transform a cramped, confined area into a luxurious, inviting space that feels larger than it actually is.

We have worked on numerous small-space projects, and we’ve learned that the key to a high quality renovation lies in thoughtful planning, strategic use of lighting, and smart design elements. Here are some tips to help you make your small space feel spectacular.

The Magic of Good Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in how a space feels, and in a small room, the right lighting can make all the difference.

Perimeter Lighting

Installing a bulkhead around the perimeter of the ceiling allowed for the integration of both bulkhead lighting and recessed LED strips. This illuminated the space and added visual interest and depth, making the room look bigger than it really is.

Accent Lighting

Adding back-lighting behind focal points of the room, such as a desk or artwork, draws attention to them and makes the space more interesting.

Task Lighting

A well-placed chandelier or pendant light above a desk can provide task lighting while also serving as an eye-catching design statement.

Natural lighting

Adding bigger windows to a small room can completely transform the space! Check out our blog about Brightening your Home with Window Upgrades for more inspiration and tips.

Don’t be Afraid of Colours and Textures

The colours and textures you choose for a small space significantly impact how big the room feels. Lighter, brighter colours make a space feel larger, while unique wall or carpet textures can add interest and warmth without overwhelming the room.

Light, Neutral Colours

Soft whites, light greys, and pastels can make a small room feel open and airy. Using a consistent colour palette throughout the room helps create a cohesive look that flows smoothly from one space to the next.

Textural Accents

Introduce texture through textiles, like a plush rug, throw pillows, or curtains. These elements add depth without adding clutter, making the room more comfortable and spacious.

Remove a Wall

To maximize space in our clients’ homes, especially in small kitchens, we sometimes blow out a load-bearing wall to let in more natural light and create an open-concept environment. Transforming two cramped areas into one open space has made a huge difference in our clients’ homes.

If you are worried about losing storage when removing a wall, we’ve got a solution:
