A beautifully designed feature wall gives the gathering space presence and character. More than a backdrop for the television, a feature wall becomes a focal point that brings together the fireplace, custom millwork, lighting, technology and material finishes in one carefully considered architectural display.
The feature wall should be shaped around the character of the home and, most importantly, how you want to live and host in the space.
Here are five luxury details that make a living room feature wall truly exceptional.
1. Layered Lighting That Sets the Mood
Lighting has the ability to completely change the ambience of a space. Within a custom feature wall, it brings depth and dimension to the design, illuminating artwork and display pieces, highlighting millwork, and creating a warm glow when the overhead lights are turned off.
In our Henderson Estates Luxury Living Room Project, puck lights were integrated directly into the floating shelves, adding ambient lighting while also illuminating the adjoining bar surface. After dark, the integrated lighting sets the mood for a movie night or a house full of guests.
Achieving the clean, effortless appearance of the layered lighting, however, requires considerable planning behind the scenes. The location of the shelves and each individual light had to be determined during the electrical rough-in, before the drywall was installed.
When lighting details are considered early, they become an architectural feature rather than an afterthought.
2. A Fireplace That Anchors the Living Room
Few elements can define a living room quite like an exceptional fireplace. Beyond warmth through Alberta’s cold winters, the fireplace establishes the architecture of the space, draws the eye, and creates a natural place for loved ones to gather.
In our Sturgeon County Luxury Living Room Renovation, our client wanted a modern fireplace and the ability to incorporate a television into the living area. We removed the existing fireplace chase and completely reframed it, giving us the freedom to reimagine the entire composition to fit their lifestyle.
The new linear gas fireplace became the foundation for an asymmetrical design featuring large-format tile, a custom decked-in hearth, cabinetry, shelving and a striking slat-wall detail. Each element was designed to create visual balance while giving the wall a strong architectural presence.
Guests’ eyes are immediately drawn to the fireplace the moment they enter the home. What was once an inconspicuous fireplace is now a defining focal point: bold, beautifully proportioned, and an inviting backdrop for lively gatherings with friends and family.
3. Tile With Architectural Presence
The most compelling living room accent walls play with more than one dimension. Scale, texture, pattern, and orientation can transform a flat wall into an architectural statement.
Rather than treating the wall as a flat expanse, different formats, orientations, and textures of tile can be layered to introduce contrast and dimension.
In the Bearspaw Living Room Feature Wall, larger-format tile surrounds the fireplace while a beautiful dark green vertically-stacked tile extends above it. There were limitations on how far the wall could project into the room without encroaching on the living area, so the tile composition became an important part of creating greater visual depth.
The beauty lies not only in the materials themselves, but in how their scale, proportion, and placement work together to shape the architecture of the room.
4. Bespoke Millwork That Defines the Living Room
Recessed bookcases, floating cabinetry, fluted detailing and illuminated shelves come together in a richly layered entertainment wall. Rather than designing around predetermined cabinet or bookshelf sizes, we love to design a feature wall that’s tailored to the room and to how the homeowners live.
Open shelving can create space for favourite books, artwork, and collected pieces, while concealed cabinetry keeps everyday necessities and AV cables accessible without adding visual clutter.
For our Kotash Court basement renovation, we designed a custom entertainment wall with a recessed bookcase, floating cabinetry, fluted wall detailing, and illuminated floating shelves. Even the finishes were considered in relation to the surrounding home, with the millwork’s details designed to complement the home’s new stair railings.
5. Concealed Technology for an Uninterrupted Design
A television may be essential to how a family uses their living room, but the cords, cables and technology that supports it should disappear into the architecture.
A living room feature wall provides an excellent opportunity to integrate technology discreetly into the design. Wiring can be concealed behind finished surfaces, while cabinetry can house the equipment needed for the television and entertainment systems.
In our Bearspaw Custom Feature Wall Project, a raceway was built behind the wall to conceal the wiring. The result is an uninterrupted backdrop where the television, fireplace, cabinetry, slat wall and tile read as a single design rather than a collection of individual elements.
The technology is seamlessly integrated into the room, leaving the architectural details and remarkable finishes to take centre stage.
