The art of renovation - granite vs. quartz - how to choose the right countertop

Granite vs. Quartz vs. Laminate

When it comes time to choose a countertop for your kitchen or bathroom renovation, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you. In this Art of Renovation video, Paul talks about different countertop options for your renovation. Knowing whether to pick granite vs. quartz, or laminate can be a challenge but with Paul’s tips you’ll be able to choose the best one for your space!

Granite Countertop

Granite is a natural stone product that is cut from different quarries all over the world. This makes the product unique in that no two slabs are the same – which can be either a benefit or a challenge, depending on how you look at it. When you select your slab, it may not look exactly the same as the one you fell in love with in the store, so this is something to keep in mind if you are planning your space around a slab sample.

Granite is a very porous stone, and you will need to seal it annually otherwise it can absorb and stain overtime, depending on what you place on its surface.

Quartz Countertop

Quartz is an engineered product that is smashed and ground up, and then pressed with polymer resin to create your countertop surface. It’s a very hard surface that comes sealed and does not require any maintenance!

The only challenge with quartz products is heat. You need to be mindful when placing hot materials on its surface, so make sure you’re using hot plates when cooking!

This product gives you a very clean and smooth looking surface.

Laminate Countertop

This product is laminated onto a plywood or an MDF surface. Laminate countertops are prone to scratching and can delaminate overtime, but with the proper application this product can save you a lot of money!

Pricing

Granite and quartz products are quite similar in price. On the lower end you’re looking at about $65 per square foot, and for more exotic products it can be as high as $200 per square foot.

Laminate products are a more cost effective option, but need more maintenance and care.

How to Choose the Right Countertop for Your Renovation

Depending on what you’re looking for in your space, any one of these three products can be a great fit! The most important factors to keep in mind are application process, maintenance and care, and of course your price point!
