Lighting Tips for Your kitchen Renovation

Art of renovation- lighting tips for your kitchen renovation

Planning Kitchen Lighting

In this Art of Renovation, Paul shares how to properly plan for kitchen lighting in your your renovation. Way too often homeowners do not take this important step in the renovation process and want to cut it out of their reno budget, resulting in them wanting to make later changes that cost them more money and stress! Watch this week’s video and Paul will walk you through this recent kitchen renovation in Edmonton, and how we worked closely with the homeowners to plan the perfect lighting for this space.

Kitchen Lighting Changes

The first important step in your kitchen renovation is planning for any lighting changes that you may have to make. Every other element in your kitchen will ultimately revolve around your lighting, so make sure you know your lighting placement before you plan your design features! In this recent penthouse kitchen renovation, we had to reconfigure the kitchen layout to ensure the pot lighting would line up with the design. Lighting is so important for contractors to plan around, and if this step is not done you may end up with shadows and dark spots, making your task lighting suffer.

This renovation also included this beautiful new island, and this is another factor to consider when planning your lighting. Advance planning for the electrical box placement is important because this step will happen way before cabinets are installed, and elements such as light fixture placement and height will need to be considered based on personal taste.

Under Cabinet Lighting

Another step in the planning process is considering under cabinet lighting. We think that this is one of the most important (and most overlooked) areas in kitchen renovations. Many homeowners do not consider under cabinet lighting to be important, but later come to realize that it would have been a useful addition, especially for things such as food preparation and mood setting.

In this kitchen renovation we installed an RGB (red, green, blue) lighting package. This package is great because you have a lot of options and features to choose from, and this can really take your kitchen design to the next level! With RGB you can dim your lighting and even sync it up to the beat of your music. We installed both over and under cabinet lighting for these homeowners, and it really makes a difference for the overall feel of the kitchen.

Don't Overlook Kitchen Lighting!

Cabinet lighting is not necessarily expensive, given the scale of this type of project. Many homeowners will cut certain lighting out of their budget and later regret it. We can’t stress enough how important it is to ensure that you and your contractor properly plan for lighting and make sure that you are both on the same page. Planning your lighting can be one of the most exciting and fun parts of your kitchen renovation! There are many possibilities with placement, fixtures, and fun things like dimmers and RGB packages. We promise you, you’ll be much happier at the end of your renovation if you’ve properly planned your lighting in advance, and you will not have regrets in the future.
